Success Stories

"All the way to China"

A Recent project of Stuff Canada
December 2000

STUFF CANADA recently received a phone call from its first- ever volunteer, Moonie Rotenberg. As a "Friend of Stuff", Moonie had made dozens of phone calls to friends and contacts in hopes of procuring "stuff" for STUFF CANADA. After many months of hearing "sorry Moonie, we have nothing for you as surplus", Moonie thought possibly that his contacts were out of date.

Then, a long time friend, Sid Dinetz of Dinetz Restaurant Supply, called Moonie in response to his canvassing for needed items. He and his son Howard had at wholesale $72,000.00 worth of dishes and glassware to donate immediately. In addition, in the new year, they would have available a truckload of surplus kitchen equipment. This will have a profound effect on the recipient, Homes First Society, a worthy charity in Toronto that deals with poverty and homelessness. They will use this donation to provide dishes and glasses for use in numerous facilities housing the disadvantaged.  They will also be able to distribute these items to those they serve who are establishing themselves in new independent-living accommodations. Using these donated goods has the added direct benefit of saving fund-raised dollars; in turn allowing them to apply these saved funds to augment their work to provide additional training and skills-building which leads to employment and increased independence.

STUFF CANADA also played a key role in finding transportation and labour to pickup this enormous donation.  An anonymous moving and storage company generously provided both the truck and manpower to move the hundreds of boxes from the donor’s premises.  In addition, STUFF CANADA was able to lead Homes First Society to Ron Smith of TLA, one of the most well- respected charities in Toronto, who agreed to provide temporary suitable warehousing for the donated goods. This donation started with Moonie, one very determined and committed volunteer, and ended with stronger community, and of course a whole lot of china!!

This is yet another wonderful story in the daily activities of STUFF CANADA. It certainly illustrates how initiatives linking business and community can touch the lives of so many.  "STUFF CANADA" wants to "dish out" very special thanks to all those who made this incredible donation possible.
